DRAMATHERAPY FOR PEOPLE WITH LEARNING
DISABILITIES

Dramatherapy offers a variety of working methods that are
applicable to a wide variety of clients within the full spectrum of
learning disabilities. Dramatherapy can help the process of
emotional growth with a person through the development of trust,
risk taking and the experience of different ways of being.

The role of the Dramatherapist is to provide a safe, supportive
space to enable and encourage the client/s to express her/himself
in whatever way they are able. The playful and active approach
makes it a very suitable intervention for adults and children with
learning disabilities and autism.

For clients with more mild disabilities the Dramatherapy session
might focus on personal issues and transformation. For other
clients with less cognitive abilities and personal insight, the
emphasis might be on creative expression, building confidence
and relationships. For clients with more profound disabilities, the
development of a relationship of trust may be a more long- term
goal. There often needs to be a balance of activity and 'just being'
with the client. The activities may include movement, music, contact
and sensory exploration.
